MRPT Incontinence Program
MRPT Incontinence Program
Female Urinary Incontinence
By Marianne Ryan-Swanson, BS, PT, OCS
Urinary incontinence is most common among women and it is estimated that one in three women are affected at some time in their life. Some may experience a small amount of leakage after sneezing, coughing or laughing, others will experience leakage on a more consistent basis.
Physical Therapy and Incontinence
Women must understand that incontinence is not something you should "learn to live with" . Urinary incontinence is not normal and resigning to wearing pads for the rest of your life is not acceptable!
Many women are unaware of the recent breakthroughs in the non-surgical treatment methods for urinary incontinence, with physical therapy being the least invasive.
A physical therapy treatment program should be discussed with your physician as an alternative treatment method before reviewing other more invasive treatment options.
Our Treatment Approach
The MRPT INCONTINENCE PROGRAM® takes a holistic approach to urinary incontinence and emphasizes the restoration of your quality of life.
Our team of highly trained physical therapists has the training and expertise to treat incontinence and bladder control issues in women. They work with women of all ages and with several types of pelvic problems ranging from simple cases requiring only pelvic floor exercises to more complex cases that require more extensive treatment methods.
Individualized treatment programs take into account all the special needs of each patient and the sensitive nature of this condition. We make sure that you feel confidant and secure in our private treatment rooms.
Our Holistic Approach Includes:
- Exercise
- Treatment Modalities (Biofeedback, Electrical Stimulation, Vaginal Cones)
- Dietary Changes
- Behavior Modification
- Patient Education
- Emotional Support
The reason why so few women try to find a cure is because of the sensitive nature of this condition and the low level of patient awareness of the new treatment options available.

Believe it or not, most people think that these problems are a normal part of pregnancy. Many women are told that "these problems are to be expected with any normal pregnancy, and you will have to just "grin and bear it".
This is not true!
A good physical therapist can help you. Pain relief is available and you deserve it.
We do not believe that persistent back pain, neck pain or any of the other uncomfortable symptoms related to carrying a child should be accepted as "just part of the process".
The main goal of the MRPT PRE AND POSTPARTUM PROGRAM® is to make a pregnant woman feel great with optimum relief from these symptoms during all stages of pregnancy and after delivery.
When should you start a physical therapy program?
The answer to this question is "as soon as possible". We have had great success with treatment programs that start during the very early stages of pregnancy. It is best to minimize the discomfort and prevent complications as your pregnancy progresses, in other words "nip these problems in the bud".
Our therapists use their advanced skills and therapeutic techniques to make the transition of becoming a mother much easier for our pregnant patients. After delivery we teach mothers how to hold their babies and care for them without injuring themselves.

Posture: Am I Sitting Correctly?
Posture: Am I Sitting Correctly?

The Importance of Posture: How We Sit
Posture is not something most people consider to be a problem, but as we become less active and our jobs involve being seated there is an increasing trend towards poor posture.
Poor posture places increased stress on our joints, bones and ligaments. Over a period of time this can lead to a breakdown of the structures within the joints and alter the way that muscles operate. Stretched muscles become weaker and shortened muscles become tighter.
Sitting incorrectly for long periods during the day, particularly when working at a computer can cause pain and problems in your neck, back, knees, hips and will cause poor posture.
Print our good & bad posture brochure and ask yourself.
Am I sitting correctly?
Are my legs supported?
Is my back supported?
Am I hunched over when using my keyboard?
Why does my neck hurt when I use my phone?
At MRPT Physical Therapy we are aware of these problems and can help you. Part of our thorough treatment is to look at your posture, to look at your work station and how you sit. Often all we need is a few pictures of you at your desk. We will suggest changes you need to make in your working environment to aid in your recovery process.
